Netflix Orders New Martial Arts Series ‘Wu Assassins’ From ‘The Raid’ Star Iko Uwais

July 4, 2018 Posted by Alex Arabian Film News, Professional Publications No Comments

[Published at The Playlist] Netflix currently has more than 300 original television programs in its pipeline, an astounding level of production compared to any of its competitors. Approximately one-third of those programs have a release date that has yet to be announced, including “Wu Assassins,” the company’s most recent original series announcement.

According to Deadline, “Wu Assassins” tells the story of a warrior chosen as the latest and last Wu Assassin, who must search for the powers of an ancient triad and restore balance in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The series is said to be a martial arts crime series with supernatural elements. The series features “The Raid” star Iko Uwais, and costars Byron Mann, who also appeared on the Netflix original “Altered Carbon.”

Impressively, Uwais, who worked as the fight choreographer on “The Raid” and “The Raid 2,” and, most recently, did double duty on the Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg action film “Mile 22,” will wear a number of hats on “Wu Assassins.” The actor will serve as one of the producers, head martial arts and fight choreographer, and stunt coordinator, as well as the star.

John Wirth (“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles;” “Falling Skies“) is writing the series, and will also serve as showrunner. Netflix is also bringing on board Tony Krantz (“24“), who will direct one episode, and Stephen Fung (“Into the Badlands“), who will helm the first two episodes of the series.

Netflix is showing no signs of slowing down. Having briefly passed Disney as the largest entertainment company in the world earlier this year, many believe that Netflix will continue its dominance for a long time to come. Let’s just hope, that the company doesn’t lose their understanding of the meaning of quality over quantity.

Production on “Wu Assassins” begins August 8, with a release date not yet known.
