The Berlinale 2017 Highlight Reel
This is a short film I made from covering my first film festival for a media outlet, the Berlin International Film Festival (The Berlinale). It includes The “Logan” Berlinale Press conference after the film’s world premiere with some great shots and words from the cast and James Mangold.
This “documentary,” if you will, is a brief window into my developing filmmaking style, and the festival through my lens.
The common theme of the films at The Berlinale festival was a “dystopian future” portrayal, a series of precautionary tales that were all urgent and contained pressing messages.
There was a shared anxiety that I noticed for the attenders and attendees of the festival; people from all over the world come to this festival, and there was an unease about Trump, Brexit, and the state of the world on the cusp of a potential period of global war, which was often expressed to me through my conversations with actors, filmmakers, other press members from different countries and festival goers alike.
Ultimately, though, this collective disquiet was expressed and overcome by love, solidarity, compassion, and unity. It was a beautiful display of the preservation of everyone’s unique respective cultures through art and film, the one medium that brings every human being together.
